how to visualize things in your head

How many mins a day you have to practice ? What I described above I see on the backs of my eyelids. On a related subject, last night I had lucid dream with a tactile component. It seems that 50Hz (60Hz) powerline flickering overloads visual processing core in the brain, somehow locking them into their objective mind and preventing the subconscious from opening. When youve had a conversation, retreat and try recalling it. I am trying to focus on keeping those flashes more than 2s. Practice with your eyes closed. My general challenge is colors. is 15 20 minutes okay? (Dont forget you are not trying to see it with your eyes, it feels to be residing somewhere else, at least in the beginning of practice) As soon as the image begins to fade, open your eyes and look at the real drawing. Ive done guided meditations for years but never have seen the scenes. Contrary to your belief, aphantasia is a real thing. Thats great feedback Paul! Later: staring at my iMac (thinking at my entire life, little `depressed` because of this aphantasia), from time to time I closed my eyes I could see few times something like stones, including the texture. To train your whelp in a given mode, follow these instructions: Haste buff: Stand within the healing target dummies in Valdrakken and cast on yourself; Crit buff: Stand in the middle of nowhere and target yourself; Single target damage: Find an isolated mob and target it; AoE damage: target the cleave target dummies in Valdrakken; Single target heal: Target Be it a table, desk, chair, shelving or otherwise, ensure what you buy serves its purpose for use. But yeah, going into a dark cave for a period of time was, like, a rite of passage in some cultures and it totally makes sense. Are the after images contained in a small rectangle in the center of your vision when you close your eyes for anybody else? One bit of encouragement was a beautiful lucid dream last week. Thank you for sharing your experience and progress such a level of detail! This one completely suprised me and I wasnt focusing on the color. This is very brief. After 15-20 minutes, I see the screen (very blurry) for ~1 second. You just IMAGINE it with high enough level of detail. Dear Phoenix, Any other tips? Just the other night I was semi-sleeping (after using a pressure mat) and my mind felt like a sketchbook in high-speed (similar to the MARVEL movies intros). Most people would have given up already. Dear Kathy, But Im also a fan of memorizing long texts, so I cant say clearly if my memory improvement enhanced in particular through training my minds eye. Click here for instructions on how to enable JavaScript in your browser. This is the music I like to listen but I get the same results without music. Or are both valid for practicing? I greatly appreciate you leaving such an honest comment. Even if you see blackness, or blurry images, keep describing something. The thing is, you will get better really quickly, and, youll be amazed how quickly you develop your memory-biceps. I struggle because I want to be a writer, and have natural talent, but I do not enjoy reading because I do not imagine it, and describing things visually is difficult. Justa dream. (though they were opposite blue is red, red is blue etc). Now in your mind's eye, with your eyes still open, visualize the object as if it were still on the table. I have a question, did you have to build a visual library from scratch, or were you able to recall images you have seen in the past? Books are usually full of very detailed descriptions of people, places, objects, etc. In all of them I was in my room, and my room was so real. #4 is also good. Thats it for this week. After some lines and paragraphs close your eyes and try to picture whatever you have just read. This has not worked for me, either. So lets say the mug had some words on it like aphantasia. Note the differences. Found a different aphantasia cure? long), youll be transported into a state of deep relaxation. Just friendly note of warning before investing too much. But Im still discouraged. Take a lighter or a box of matches. You should dedicate some weeks or even months to regular practice before complaining that it doesnt work. Anyways, Ill keep plugging away and hopefully make some real progress. There's this book, 'The Cube' where you're asked to visuslize things that together create a picture that when interpreted says things about you as a person. Employ gentle persistence and effort and keep revealing clues that can guide you. When you say you want to visualize, like you said, walking through your front door, does that mean youve got already control over simple images? Maybe its just blurry light or, even better, you actually see the shape of the flame. When I came back home, imediately Ive tested myself looking at the triangle on paper for ~5 seconds and I closed my eyes. :) Ive actually been doing these types of techniques for years now. Ive been doing this for a week or so and Im finding all my after images to be all negative colour. There are fun water features, plenty of 1. As you have succeeded in visualizing, among these which exercises were most beneficial for you (surely some of them should be more beneficial than the other) ? Thank you. The more careful you observe, analyze and internalize the little things the better, clearer will be your final drawing. Combine your previously mastered astral senses. Today during image streaming I was able to see a few vague images of cartoon cars. I was wondering though, since the exercises involve afterimages, is visualization really being trained? Please dont give up! The best news of all, however, is I am seeing the objects very clearly and I have you to thank for it! I also see whatever else is in my field of vision. Try to not laugh! Now, the one thing that is true and Ill repeat it, was that one time I feel semi-asleep on my pressure mat and ACTUALLY SAW A STREAM OF IMAGES in high speed. I have a question about the after images (Im still trying the candle exercise), I hope I can word it properly. Its actually difficult with flame of the candle. Thats excellent (even though not yet clear or stable). Or image should be somewhere in your head and you should avoid concentration on your kinda eye area? Thank you very much for sharing your experiences and your progress with everyone here! Never. Can I follow you? Arka, Im sorry about misspelling your name (fixed now). But I stupidly took too much and had a bit trip, so Id say I saw this for <30 minutes before things became too muchI didn't see much colour, only geometrical figures but I could definitely see something when I closed my eyes. When you visualize, are you seeing things on the back of your eyelids or somewhere in your head? Its a debate with my wife. Ive used the candle exercise, the color exercise and various forms of image streaming. End of Week #4 Because if I close my eyes all I see is blackness and the focus shift to seeing through the eye instead of recalling image from the mind so is this normal ? Thank you! :)) :) Since then I havent really been able to visualise very well at all. 5. I will post again in a week. But now Im back, and I can actually see the after-image of the candle flame (even though it is tinyliketiny..). My current state is extremely accurately described by this quotation: You close your eyes, and all you see is blackness or, at best, you see some blurry shapes.. Your goals in visualization are thus: Training yourself to see and respond to opportunities Creating simulated experiences to get yourself familiar with things and remove uncertainty, fear, and doubt Clarifying your path, mission, and objectives - hammering home for yourself what you really want and what you're really after Perhaps, every night, when you go to bed, rehearse your daily wins by reviving them in your mind adding the successfeeling to it. So the last 2 days I was a reasearch machine. How the little things are internalized ? Many people say that when we are children we can imagine and see things as we want them to be I remember trying to see my future, like all the other girls, but I saw nothing so I believed I will die at a very young age and thats how I explained the impossibility of visualising. Just started the visualization technique. My favorite form of image streaming is to lie in bed and stare at the texture in the ceiling, and describe what the patterns look like. How frequently do people report doing these things? says Hettie Roebuck, a postdoctoral researcher in Lupyans lab and Do this over and over, and then progress to a wider landscape: everything you can see through your eyes, for example. Hi Marco. No luck yet. My wife says real visualization is not there, but out in your mind. But in terms of remember auditory details, im really bad, i struggle to remember the conversations i had (i can remember what we talked about in summary, but i almost never can remember the exact words of the conversation). Is like a vague and blurry fog but is well observable especially on corners of my room. This is about the sixth month after the original occurrence, and unfortunately my short term memory has been slightly affected as well. What kind of conversations did you have? Its true, I gave up easily, I thought it will come naturally one day. Out of curiosity, do you know of any cases of people who used to be able to visualize clearly and lost the ability, and subsequently regain the ability through a practice such as this one? Eyes Opened & Eyes Closed Perhaps throw in some variation. What can you get out of it? But before start i have to make you two questions: Simply imagine yourself acting the way you would act if your goals had already been achieved. If you constantly dig for details, then you get the point. Now open your eyes and look at the exact spot on the table where the object was before you removed it. It is very strange. Please keep in mind youll needpatience. Its like I hit a mental wall and bounced backwards off it. If thats the case, one may practice in daylight, or use fluorescent or LED lighting, or even go really old-school and use candles or oil/kerosene lamps (which also add to the atmosphere if youre doing something occult). Now, I am able to keep the image of my window effortlessly for ~10 seconds (+ 3-5 seconds disolving) but more than that: I can see the fine texture of the window curtain. I have to see it in my mind, there is no other way. Okay, open your eyes and repeat the process a few times. Things came to a head for Catherine and Clare in a devastating, 11-minute two-hander. How long can you practice for each day? Thank you again and when Ill visualise, it will be because of you. Every time you close your eyes make sure they are absolutely relaxed. See what works best for you. Run your fingertips over surfaces, squeeze things, stomp your foot onto the ground, dig your nose into objects, etc. They are still not where I want them to be but Ive found progress (e.g observing keys, shampoo bottles and whatnot and..actually getting the outlines). The only way to be sure you have aphantasia would be to see a neurologist and potentially get fMRI brain imaging done, to look at whats happening in your brain when you try to visualize, Swart explains. Today Ill start doing everything I can. If you cant take avail of it right now, just grab another one for the same purpose. Ive been doing the candle and shapes exercises for 12 days now. Now using that same example lets say it is a mug and you observe it with the handle to the right as you are looking straight on the mug. Does it move, or does it make a sound?Answer these questions internally and in silence. I try to make tiny ones at the corners. That was my mistake, for years I shut off all mental imagery because I didnt want to see the bad images and ended up not seeing any images at all. Cool experience. but i also can not do it with smell sound and taste either. If this man who had been exercising this muscle for 60 years cant do it, how do you expect people who havent been able to do it their entire lives to do it? But once you experience youre making an actual progress its like opening a door into a new world of possibilities. Start collecting images and quotes that represent how you'd like your future self to be. Slowly follow its contours once. I started practising yesterday AND I SAW A RED DOT AND I SAW PUPRLE. Often they are of things I dont want to see, like corpses or faces of people I dont like. Cheers! Its kind of like the aurora borealis, sometimes swirling or cascading. First Relax, after relax, visualise, and my visualisation seems to be little better, well see later. I hope it works. I can now guess that persistence and determination is probably the (only) key. Your personal continuous experience will tell you what works best for you. Observe your chosen color carefully and then try to imagine it in your mind. I think Im an aphantasiac, but Ive been meaning to use the memory palace technique, but I cant see my palace, all though I remember it, and that makes it difficult because I cant peg. This demands a high level of concentration and control and youll quickly register progress. What you do is you consciously relax through with preferred method. Progress report: First, Id like to thank Dorin for sharing their experiences. Far from me the idea of being pretentious, I just want to share my story with people and I hope I can be helpful to even one person. Theyll know, if you can do it, they can do it too. Sometimes it doesnt work for me, but other times, never before ~10 min, but once I really zone out, stop TRYING TO SEE like straining my eyeballs, my brain must take over and I can get some shapes and things. It's merely a thought. Maybe, after youve used it for some time, you can report back to us again. I think, if Id be standing in your shoes, Id work on it at least 3 months to really proof to myself that, I can either get your minds vision back or not. But later, the more you do it consciously, the more you run your visualization-software on autopilot. Pick one guided visualization video and listen to it at least 3 times a week. The image seems actually visible, and not imaginable, as I always had before. Soon youll be able to lighten up your mental theater. You came up with new ideas? If you like to find out more, keep reading, First, let me give you a quick intro about my story. Lets do color. The Mind's eye most likely utilizes the Visual cortex and adjacent predominantly visual cortical areas of the Parietal lobe and Temporal lobe ( Seeing and Imagining: Clues to the Workings Of the Mind's Eye ). Before sleep: Candle again + 30min meditation (added this week) I started the visualization with the candle exercise and I can sustain the image, color, shape of the candle for a few seconds then it fades away. All I got was afterimages. Hello Marko, After 15 minutes of doing your exercises last night I could see all 5 squares and their COLORS! When you reached a state of calmness and relaxation, focus on your mental imagery. # I did it for 30 minutes a day for weeks. So, if you find you get better results using a different approach, please keep at it. Anyone who follows this guide and learns to visualize things does not have aphantasia; they simply havent been using their ability to visualize. I would now say that my visualization is 22.5/10. Because of my personal experience, I believe: Aphantasia is the inability to see (and create) mental images because of an untrained mental muscle. It seems like its 2 separate screens almost, maybe using different parts of the brain. When this happens, dont get annoyed and dont start the exercise from the beginning. When you look into a light source then close your eyes, youll see a bright duplicate (usually fades quickly), no matter how good your visualization skills are. It was even the wrong colour (meant to be purple) and only 1-2 cm in diameter but still a pleasant surprise because prior to that it has always (and still) been very dark colours. If you do this every night, for a few days, just before you go to sleep, youll get some astonishing results: If everythings ok, then for the next session you increase the time of retention of the image. Heres how: What you describe as random, better-than-real-life-images, I havent experienced yet, but I heard of others who indeed have. Hi Marko. Im having less luck creating images on command. Very likely, aphantasia-normal-hyperphantasia is a spectrum, on one extreme some people can't experience any sensory things mentally, on the other maybe they can play out literal movies in their head. This is very true. Also, now is a habit to use afterimages everywhere. Dont give up on it and keep at it. Biggest success this month was seeing a red brick building for a second, seeing it start to fade away and willing it to come back which it did for another second or so. I couldnt get any image with my eyes shut and at one point I felt like I saw a small pink line, but it was random and it all could have just been my imagination. I did the same for ~1.5 hours. Heres a short list what you can do with the power of visualization: In a nutshell, you can apply visualization all areas of your life. Which will, at some point, give you contradicting answers. I just figured it was all in the mind. But at least 15min. nice advices, thank you. The only way you can get better (both in clarity and stability) is to practice a lot. Its black. How about you Marko how would you have done mental rotations with a blank screen and once you were able to start seeing images in your minds eye was it natural for that image to be able to be manipulated through mental rotation for you. I drawn a triangle on A4 paper using a black marker. Maybe its because I am trying to capture more of the now staying more aware of whats happening around me this moment. I think my short term memory improved indeed. Color doesnt really matter, because youll have to repeat the exercise with all primary colors anyway. However without seeing mental images, this dream of mine will likely remain a dream. Sometimes, I see things that arent directly in my field of vision, but the images tend to be extraordinarily dim, almost to the point of invisibility (its very hard to describe, but maybe this is what visualization is as described by ironwheal?). Persistence is the key. Perhaps if recognize that some image is in my minds eye though I didnt try to develop it I should observe whatever it is for how long I could but again at least at this point when I consciously think about the image that appeared that is the end of the image just as quickly as the random image showed up when consciouly trying to keep it on the mental paper it vanishes. You can also download all these shapes to your computer here (packed into a rar-file). I really enjoyed the tune and tried to youtube the song while dreaming but to no avail. Thank you for your review! But Im just making sure Cause I can imagine scenarios in my head without closing my eyes. So thats all new experiences for this week. Take the room you are in. This is extremely rare but it idd occur to days ago. Just dont force it. Leading with Mental Ideas So practising visualisation durning brain degeneration and without hormones may be impossible form my experience ;) Its almost a habit. 5/10/20 I thought I would give you an update on how Im doing. It doesnt really matter how you look at the candle (or whatever item). In fact, my mind seems to have an easier time with colorful, vivid images. I did the exercises for a while and nothing. 1. Now in order to develop mental rotation skills using the glass scenario would I then physically turn the mug around so the handle was on the left side when you looked at it straight on and then try to pay attention to details of how the mug looked, before it was rotation and after it was rotating and then do the close eye and open eye exercise. But this is more strange: if I move my head around my room, that greenish spot is changeing/shapeing according to the objects I know: room corners, room window, my desk, etc. Once again, visualize, correcting the difference. Will you be the first person? Stop touching your eyes and begin describing what you see (out loud). If the image is completely gone, try to recall details mentally even if you cant see them. Read some more, then repeat visualization. 3. And, I was kinda taken aback because I couldnt see a thing in my mind. ;), Hi David happy to see all of your efforts, like you I have practicing image streaming for around 6 months even if I did only 20 min, I saw some results,I started dreaming once again, something that didnt happened to me for years, the result are small, but they are real, I should probably try to mix with others exercises as well, by the way, many believe that image streaming also improves iq, I cant see any difference, but do you feel any improvement on your cognitive abilities? Let me explain. I am usualy patient and positive (Im 37 years old). Candle on night When the after-image is gone, a greenish spot remains (again, vague). About two weeks ago, I realized for the first time in my life that people arent just speaking figuratively when they say, Picture this. After a little bit of research and a lot of reading about aphantasia, I was convinced that there was no way for me to develop this skill. And when I discovered that others did have this so called ability to view things in their minds eye, I was in disbelief that there could exist such a world that I was oblivious to. :), Work on concentration. I believe most people use mental rotation to help in driving and eliminate some of the intentional processing that goes on if you dont see the image and rotate it in your head. While practicing during the day, I have seen a few images, but again, only for a second or so. You should do this at least 30 times during one practice session. And also, when I feel the next breakthrough and report it back here, other people might be encouraged as well. Please let us know if make any progress with these (or other) exercises. . Next, I could hold onto these afterimages and make small adjustments (like changing colors, size, and shape). Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. I have some questions, again: this exercise that im practising works only for memory or also to increase visualization skills? For about a week now I been watching this subliminal visualization video on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF7mOqHpBkM The weird thing is that I need to feel movement for me to see it. Light a candle and take a seat in a comfortable chair about 3 feet in front of it. Didnt experience visulization yet so dont know how does it feels though. I understand your frustration. Im happy to hear that youre seeing results already! Later, youll walk without thinking about it consciously anymore. Again take a blank sheet of paper and paint a color spot. Reach out and take the object into your hand and remove it from the table. Just for reference: I never did #1, didnt suit me. For us, for some reason, we didnt visualise naturally. I think, if you plan to benefit from visualization for the rest of your life, it sure is worth practicing a few minutes every day. Yet, I dont give my images a location. I see occasional fuzzy images of people, buildings and vehicles. It was like I had a small TV (1/4th in size) in the corner of my mind. No matter how hard you try to imagine yourself a different color, youll stay the same. Observe the candles flame calmly, with mild eyes for 5-10 seconds. THIS. As it is with learning anything else, trying too hard and keeping it too serious can stunt your progress. When I recall my dreams, its like remembering a movie I saw yesterday, I can tell you what I saw, but I dont see the images again. I know, this can be a frustrating process but, because this is such an intangible matter, only persistant experimentation will show you the ideal way to practice. Movement I think there is a way to overcome this, and likely other internal senses will fall into place after the visual element is working. Then, and this is most important, describe out LOUD what you see in as much DETAIL as possible. The key is deep relaxation when you see that movement (swirlings/cascading) so thats why 15-25 minutes is what I need using meditation to enter in that state of deep relaxing. Then, whenever youve a free moment, observe a nearby object. Close your eyes and attempt see the object (or scene) with your minds eye. Repeat the process, collecting more details and close your eyes again. Tanks Marko, i will follow your advices! Great effort youre putting into it. 1) After staring at an image on my screen Im now able to see an afterimage for about 20-30 seconds. The stop light that just turned red Please keep exploring different exercises (not just the ones you read here) and follow your intuition. For a better visualization experience, try to involve sight, smell, sound, and feel. I think progress is a matter of persistence practise. Continuing with 45 minutes of image streaming every day, and once a week doing the guided meditation/hypnosis I mentioned previously. If you currently cant visualize your goals with your minds eye, express your goals, your visions in writing. In order to call up a mental image, we first need to know how it looks like. Was there few seconds with my eyes closed and/or open. If you want to improve the auditory channel, the same principle applies. Do you think that developping my visualization skills i could solve this problems? Suffice to say I was disappointed when I woke up :(. This is perfect as a catnap to recharge your batteries. But, why not see for yourself? Is pretty much like a greenish fog. when you visualise something, does it show up in the same place as those weird swirly patterns do when you rub your eyes too hard? So far, I havent heard of one yet.. Thank you. In the very beginning, when I couldnt see anything at all, I mostly did the candle exercise because of the strong after image you get from looking at the flame. During my research I found out that at least for some people (I didnt really have this issue) common incandescent lights present a huge problem. What did you do after you left the house? 3) Learn to use symbols more consciously. Or are you saying try to visualise what is in the videos of the guided meditations?
